LATINO LEADERS RALLY AROUND TONY CARDENAS FOR CONGRESS
Padilla, Fuentes, Martinez Say Cardenas’ Candidacy Marks Turning Point for San Fernando Valley
(Los Angeles) – Signaling the growing momentum of Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas’ run for Congress in the new predominately Latino Northeast San Fernando Valley seat, State Senator Alex Padilla, Assemblymember Felipe Fuentes, and Los Angeles Unified School District Board Member Nuri Martinez announced their endorsement of the pioneering Latino leader and valley native today.
With voters increasingly frustrated with divisive politics, Padilla applauded Cardenas’ record as a consensus-builder: “With the nation’s attention focused squarely on the need for leaders in Washington to come together around a real agenda for jobs, valley voters know they can count on Tony Cardenas because time and again he has risen above partisanship, consistently delivering balanced budgets as Assembly budget chairman and reforming the City’s small business tax code to jumpstart job creation.”
The three valley Latino leaders pointed to Cardenas’ candidacy as a turning point for the San Fernando Valley under new district maps tentatively approved last week. The new boundaries finally unite East San Fernando Valley communities in a single congressional district, and predominately Latino voter registration in the district signals a historic opportunity for Latinos to increase their representation in Congress.
“Tony Cardenas was born and raised in the Northeast San Fernando Valley and now he’s raising his family here, so there is no question where his priorities lie,” said Assemblymember Felipe Fuentes. “As the first Latino to represent the San Fernando Valley in the legislature, Tony made history and changed our communities for the better by delivering on the issues that matter most to us: safety for our families, education for our kids, health care and security for our seniors.”
“Tony Cardenas is an education champion with the common-sense budgeting experience we need in Congress. Tony’s tireless efforts to see our children succeed enabled him to secure more than $650 million in new construction dollars to relieve classroom overcrowding in Los Angeles and his reforms of the state lottery have delivered $1 billion for new textbooks and classroom materials, without raising taxes,” said Los Angeles Unified School District Board Member Nury Martinez.
The open Northeast San Fernando Valley congressional district tentatively approved by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission is composed of 56% Democrats, 17% Republicans and represents approximately 69% Latinos. No current Member of Congress resides in this new district.
Cardenas, a Democrat, opened a congressional committee in July. Following final approval of the district boundaries by the Redistricting Commission on August 15, Cardenas expects to run, and win.
